The march that wasn't

Three weeks ago, on Saturday the 8th of October 2011, I went on a march through Melbourne. With about 4000 other people! Down Wellington Parade, Flinders St, Russell St, Bourke St and finished at the steps of Parliament House in Spring St. You can see some of the march in Flinders St in the pic below. It fills one side of the road for at least two city blocks ahead and there are many more further back out of the picture.

You read about it in the paper, didn't you. 4000 people marching through Melbourne would be on the front page!? You didn't read about it? Well, neither did I ... not in any paper I looked at. Not The Age. Not the Herald Sun. Not the Geelong Advertiser. Nothing Apparently it got a few seconds on the ABC news. That's all. But more about that later!

Updating the business

Well ... we have done some significant things to the ThisisAustralia.com.au business. Because we are growing we have had to:

Start charging GST.  When a business in Australia turns over more than $75 000 per annum they have to charge GST (Goods and Services Tax), and pay that to the government. So now we have to charge GST. You will notice that GST is now automatically charged on all products.

To make it a little easier for our customers we have worked to lower our prices to offset some of the tax. We have succeeded with some of our products ...

We have also had to begin charging postage on most of our products. (Some of our larger products, like furniture, have separate delivery arrangements) We've kept it to a very reasonable $12.00 to anywhere in Australia. The postage is charged only once per order - so if you order, say 5 items, you still only get charged $12 for postage once.

The postage charge is automatically added at checkout.

Postage overseas is charged at cost.

Our quick response times and personalised service remain the same.

Thanks

The navy rescues a sailor

The Aussie navy again rescues a yachtsman in the Southern Ocean.

The frigate 'Arunta' raced from Fremantle to rescue yachtsman Yann Elies from the southern Indian Ocean off the south coast of WA. Elies was confined to his bunk with a broken leg, unable to reach painkillers or food while he waited for rescuers. He could get to the radio so his rescuers knew that he was in great pain. The only thing he had to sustain him for two days while he waited for rescuers was a bottle of Coke!

Australia, the movie.

Australia, the movie.

I suppose one of the purposes of movies is the same as fiction books - to express in a story truths about people and groups of people and the way they think and respond in different situations. To bring to light the things people do that in the immediate action may be hidden by the assumptions of the time. In so doing to challenge the way people think about things. To move people to change their ways of thinking about things that happen

At the same time a movie has the purpose of entertaining people, to give them a good time, and to make them feel good about some part of themselves or 'their' people, their country.

'Australia' is a story that touches many aspects of the way we see ourselves. it challenges us, challenges our past, challenges our perception of ourselves. It shows the Australian character in both some very positive ways, and in some very negative ways.

Why we are here?

So what is the purpose of ThisIsAustralia.com.au? What are we trying to achieve?

I have a dream. A dream of a website that tells about Australia, and gives people the opportunity to share in that, both by contributing their stories, or by purchasing some Australian made product.

I want to tell the stories of Australia. Not all of them, obviously, but those that seem important to me. Stories of people who somehow show the spirit of Australia. Stories of the places of Australia that catch my attention, that have a history or spirit that embody that same spirit. Stories of events that have significance.
